People often find themselves struggling when the coping mechanisms initially developed out of
necessity begin to create harmful patterns of behavior, both internally and externally. Once a person
seeks professional help, Hunter, as your therapist, creates a working relationship with you to identify
the negative coping strategies and replace them with positive coping skills to better manage the
symptoms of your unhappiness or dissatisfaction. Further, he will guide you using the power of
narrative, or the stories we tell ourselves, to help you see how these narratives contribute to feelings of
guilt and shame resulting in the inability to love and care for yourself.
Hunter has successfully used an array of counseling modalities including person-centered therapy,
cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, solution-focused brief therapy, and narrative
therapy while providing counseling in various settings including a non-profit, family counseling agency; a
residential, addiction treatment facility; and at a severe mental health agency. Having used these
methods to address mental health challenges including anxiety, depression, addiction, trauma, and
personality disorders, he believes these challenges can be managed in healthier ways to create a greater
sense of peace, happiness, and well-being.
In addition to working with individuals, Hunter works with couples and family units seeking intervention
for unhealthy relationships primarily using a systems theory to address conflict and relationship
dissatisfaction to promote interpersonal growth, understanding, and fulfillment. Hunter has completed level 1 Gottman training. Elements of The Gottman Method is employed to address how past experiences can create dissatisfaction in relationships, which oftentimes manifests from past childhood trauma and unhealthy attachment styles. Hunter Shade, LPC, graduated from Texas Tech University in 2017 with a Bachelor of Science
in Human Development and Family Studies, and a Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling in 2020.
Hunter is currently available for sessions by appointment and accepts Aetna, Team Choice, Scott & White, First Care, Tricare West, and United insurance, as well as private pay. He sees clients at our South Lubbock location, located at 2507 79th St, STE B.
